Our Heritage Reid Funeral Home

Over 120 Years of Service

After over 100 years of service, and three generations of family-ownership, Reid Funeral Home is one of the largest and oldest independently family owned funeral homes in Essex County. Year after year, more families turn to us in their time of loss and grief, having certainty in our long tradition of service that is compassionate, devoted, correct to the smallest detail, and completely guaranteed.

In 1860 William Finck started a funeral and furniture business in Leamington. On January 1, 1888 William Smith bought Mr. Finck's business.

William's son, Robert E. Smith began working with the company in 1900, at which time the business became known as Smith & Son Funeral and Furniture until 1948 when it was incorporated as William Smith & Co . Ltd.

Robert E. Reid began working with the company in 1937 and worked his way up to president. In 1962, Robert's son, James R. joined the business with his father.

The company remained Wm. Smith & Co. Ltd. until 1969. At this time following the death of Robert Smith, the company became Reid Funeral Home.

In 1974 David Connor, became shareholder in the company followed by Robert Hudders in 1975. Robert Reid retired in 1979 after 42 active years with the company.

On February 27, 1988, Reid Funeral Home, Essex was officially opened offering the residents of Essex and it's surrounding area the same compassionate service that is a trademark of the Leamington location.

In 1984, Kevin Reid began working at the firm and following the retirement of his father James Reid and David Connor in 1997, became partner with Robert Hudders. These two men along with their capable staff continued to provide the residents of Leamington and Essex with caring, compassionate service.

As part of the community for over 115 years, we have seen many changes. At Reid Funeral Home, the one thing that has not changed, is our commitment to the community to provide a genuine spirit of caring to families. In July 2006, Robert Hudders and Kevin Reid, were proud to announce that they welcomed Craig Baker as a partner with the Reid Funeral Home.

Families come to us for personal service. For attention to their wishes, respect for their budgetary needs, correct to the smallest detail. They trust us, generation after generation, for our dedication to their comfort and personal needs. It is the foundation of a tradition that began over a century ago.
